You?ve been reading here how useful gamification is proving in a variety of spheres. You will notice this week that we are focusing on how games enhance education. Even in decades gone past, when technology had in no way taken over the world like it has in this millennium, true education stood for much more than just filling young minds with knowledge. Along with all the bright minds that graduated through the portals of premium educational institutions, there were a good number who did not receive all of their education in the classroom and still contributed to the development of global business in novel ways. Intelligence is inherent to some extent. But innovation can be induced at a very young age through creative means. Studies show that games whether online or on the playground develop skills that are needed for life. They encourage new ways of thinking and strategy.
We think education in World 2.0 has to mirror the thinking of people like W. B. Yeats who said all those years ago, ?Education is not filling a pail but the lighting of a fire?. Knowledge can be gained at various stages of life, even as we work on various projects. However, there is an increasing demand for innovation and the pioneering spirit in a competitive world that is always on the lookout for something new in every subject, specialty or sphere of relevance. Moreover, it eradicates poverty and presents new opportunities for employment in many countries where learning levels have been historically low. Learning, we believe, can unite the world.
3P Learning has been organising The World Education Games for a couple of years now. It?s ?Mathletics? initiative is an award-winning learning resource. Reportedly, it has over 4 million student users in about 10,000 schools across the world. World Maths Day 2010 was recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest mathematics competition held online. This year, The World Education Games initiative will hold three key competitions for students and schools all over the world. March 6 will be commemorated as World Spelling Day and a corresponding competition will be held as part of a global campaign supporting UNICEF?s education initiatives in 2012. March 7 and March 8 will see two other competitions being run as part of World Math Day and World Science Day celebrations respectively. These online contests are free and participation is possible on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.
The Games open on February 1 when registrations begin and practise period will be activated. The World Champion will be named on March 23 2012. This year an estimated 5.5 million students will participate from across 200 countries. Schools that participate are encouraged to contribute by purchasing the ?School-in-a-Box? (a stock of vital classroom supplies) for a little more than a couple of hundred dollars. These boxes are then donated to underprivileged students.
GeoSocials enables learning and exploration in so many different ways. We will showcase a couple or more potential related uses this week. But we would love to hear from you if you have used GeoSocials to help your child learn something new. Get in touch with us and we might even be able to enhance learning experiences for you even further. We want to know how we can truly make the world a learning-cum-playground for you and your children.
