Many people love their pet cats and regard them as important members of the family. In-fact, cats are sometimes pampered and adored, although they are very independent creatures and, although they enjoy attention from humans, really love freedom. Unlike dogs that are happy to stand by their owner?s side all day long, cats prefer to do their own thing, and gain TLC when they feel like it. The following are some amazing facts about domesticated pet cats you may not know.
Whiskers
The saying that something was achieved by ?a cat?s whisker,? meaning it was difficult or tight probably comes from the fact that cats work out the size of a gap they want to crawl through via their whiskers. If their whiskers touch the sides they know getting through could be a tight squeeze, and if their whiskers don?t touch the sides at all they know they?ll have no problem getting through.
Communication
Cats are more adept at vocal communication than dogs, and can make up to 100 different sounds. They communicate via body language too. For example, after they?ve had an unsettling experience they are likely to adopt preening gestures, such as licking their paws. This helps them feel at ease and comforts them. So if your cat comes home after a fight and begins grooming you?ll know they are feeling stressed and are trying to relax again.
Sleeping
Like dogs, house cats spend up to 14 hours a day sleeping. This could be where the phrase cat napping comes from, as they tend to take lots of naps rather than sleeping for a straight 14 hours at a time. Cat napping is becoming more popular in the world of humans now, as it?s often recommended that stressed business people have a power nap, in-order to recuperate during the day and refocus.
Vision
Cat?s vision is about 6 times better than the average human?s eyesight when the sun goes down, although it?s a myth that they stay up the entire night. They like to hunt at dusk, which is when they are most active.
Eating
A cats jaw isn?t capable of moving sideways, although this certainly doesn?t give them trouble when eating. They need to eat the equivalent of about five mice a day, depending on their age and size of course.
They are?carnivores, which means they are designed to eat meat, not vegetables. Feeding them vegetarian food could make them ill. You may see peas and green beans added to some tinned cat food. However this is to satisfy humans, not their pet cats. Producers of cat food have cottoned on to the fact that pet owners think their pets will be healthier if they include vegetables in their diet, and may spend more money on cat food they imagine is healthy. It?s true that cats sometimes eat grass, just as dogs do. However they don?t do this to gain nutrition. They do it to bring up hair balls.
Cats are incredible animals with a long history alongside humans. The Egyptians loved them, and mummified them, just as they did their deities when they died. 300,000?mummified cats?were discovered 1888 by a peasant. Some were stolen, and the rest were made into fertilizer. The Egyptians no doubt, would not have approved.
