UFC 159 was clearly cursed by demons (Video)

"It was a very weird night."

UFC president Dana White started the post-UFC 159 press conference with these words. The event featured a nasty broken thumb on Yancy Medeiros, and equally nasty broken toe on Jon Jones, two fight stoppages because of eyepokes, and one fight that was canceled hours before it was supposed to happen.

But the craziest part of all? The demonic voice that was heard between rounds of Michael Bisping's win over Alan Belcher.

Did the gates of hell open before the fight, and did Satan send his minions to New Jersey? Were Bisping's cornermen, who were bathed in creepy red light, actually demons? Middle Easy thinks it was a spell from "Passages of the Dead."

It's possible the UFC ticked off the wrong person and got the evil eye thrown its way. The bigger question: Are we all cursed for watching the bouts?

STUTTGART, Germany (AP) ? Maria Sharapova beat Li Na 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday to successfully defend her WTA Porsche Grand Prix title in a final between the last two French Open champions.

The top-seeded Russian swept to her second title of the year after winning in Indian Wells, Calif. She became the first player to retain the Stuttgart title since Lindsey Davenport in 2005.

"I thought it'd be the toughest match of the tournament, but I played my best tennis today," Sharapova said. "I was able to step it up."

This was her 29th career title and 16th consecutive win on clay, dating to Rome last year. Since Stuttgart last year, she is 23-1 on clay. Her only loss was to Serena Williams in Madrid.

Sharapova, ranked No. 2, was using the Stuttgart tournament for her clay-court debut this season, as she did last year when she went on to capture the French Open.

The second-seeded Li had a double-fault on match point, with another one earlier in the final game.

"I was under pressure on her return," Li said. "She was aggressive."

Sharapova had to fight through three long three-setters to get to the championship match, but there was little drama in the final.

The Russian opened with a break and went up 4-1 before Li could pull back one break. But that was not enough, and Sharapova closed the set with a service winner.

"I tried to put it together from the start," Sharapova said.

Li, who became the first Chinese player to win a Grand Slam title with her victory at Roland Garros in 2011, simply didn't have enough consistency to threaten. Sharapova gained the key break in the seventh game of the second when Li sent a volley wide.

Sharapova holds a 9-5 career edge over Li, who beat her in the semifinals of the Australian Open, the year's first Grand Slam.

"I'm a little sad to lose," Li said. "But it's a pretty good start to my clay-court season."

Karl Rove stands by his man

Karl Rove, who has been described by former President George W. Bush as ?the architect? of his 2000 and 2004 election victories, isn?t backing down in his defense of the former president?s legacy, saying ?he got the big things right.?

?He kept us safe after 9/11, he moved to modernize our tools, provide the tools to fight terror, he called terror for what it was, he tackled the big issues of trying to reform Social Security, Medicare, immigration, education,? Rove tells Politics Confidential, standing outside the new Bush library and museum.

When asked if he has any regrets about the Iraq War, knowing now that Saddam Hussein did not actually possess weapons of mass destruction that were given as the main justification at the time, Rove says he still thinks the war was the right decision.

?I do believe that the Iraq War was the right thing to do and the world is a safer place for having Saddam Hussein gone,? says Rove, who points out that there was a ?bipartisan consensus? that Hussein had WMD?s before the U.S. entered the war ten years ago.

On the topic of the 2008 financial crisis that resulted in the greatest U.S. economic recession since the Great Depression, he says President Bush is not at fault.

?I'll tell you what it is: it is a 20 year history of letting these two institutions get out of control,? says Rove.

Rove loosely faults those who let the country?s financial institutions get over leveraged, and specifically identifies Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) and other Senate Democrats for threatening to veto a regulatory bill in 2005 that he says would have reined in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

When it comes to ranking the former president on a historical scale, Rove says he?d put Bush high on his list, with the exception of a few presidents.

?The greats, you can't touch: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan, FDR, the greats. But yeah, I'd put him up there,? says Rove, who refers to a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll that found 47 percent approve of Bush as evidence that he will continue to be remembered more keenly as time goes by.

Interested in starting a career as a plumber? Generally poorly stereotyped, a plumbing career can be a great trade skill and provide a great salary. Becoming a plumber is a difficult task with much more training and education than most people realize. If you try working with plumbing yourself you will soon realize it can be a complex and difficult task without the proper skills.

The path to master begins with becoming a plumbing apprentice. You can look for a union sponsored program through your state or for a government program intended to create an incentive for learning a trade. These programs combine job training with educational courses. The union sponsored programs often are in high demand and this can often lead to poor acceptance rates and long application times. Do some searching and engage the local union as to what your best opportunities are in the area.

It can be difficult to get accepted into a sponsored program. Thankfully there are alternatives to union-based programs. Look for a trade school or vocational school in your area that offers plumbing certifications. Make sure they are accredited and up-to-date with the state requirements before you enroll. Also try and look for a school with a successful job placement program. This can often take you right into a job someplace as you further your education.

It usually takes about four or five years to complete an apprentice program. Once you?ve completed the trade test you will become a journeyman plumber. In order to become a master plumber, you may have to have from four to five years of experience as a journeyman plumber. In addition, you will have to take a test. This test might cover topics such as federal state and local plumbing codes, plumbing systems, and more. Each state has different requirements and testing, so make sure that you work with your local licensing agency to find out specifically what you will need to do to get your master plumber?s license.

LG Cloud rolling out in over 40 more countries by late May

Although LG jumped into the deep end of the online services pool when it launched LG Cloud last year, it didn't have much to brag about when access was limited to South Korea, Russia and the US. The company is about to broaden its horizons considerably -- it now plans to deploy LG Cloud to more than 40 additional countries before the end of May. While the electronics giant hasn't outlined its plans on a nation-by-nation basis, it's planning a truly worldwide expansion that should include Asia, Europe and Latin America. Stability and Security: Relics of the Past?

DETROIT?Nicole Current is a third-generation member of the United Auto Workers who grew up in a middle-class neighborhood on Detroit?s west side. Her grandfather migrated to Michigan from the South for the promise of a good factory job and spent his life working in Henry Ford?s crown jewel, the River Rouge auto plant. Current, now 39, was 22 when she started working at American Axle & Manufacturing, a General Motors supplier. ?We were working seven days a week, 10 or 11 hours a day,? Current recalls. ?So many people were buying trucks that we couldn?t make front and rear axles fast enough to get them to the [automaking] plants.?

That was then. When gas prices started to skyrocket, Americans didn?t buy as many trucks. Current lost her job in early 2012, along with everyone else at her plant on the Detroit-Hamtramck border. A strike four years earlier left workers with a $10-an-hour wage cut. ?Many of our workers were also receiving public assistance after that,? Current says, ?because the wage was so low.? When management pressed for more concessions, the union balked. So American Axle simply shut the plant down.

Like many autoworkers, Current had every reason to think that a full-time factory job would pay enough for her to maintain a middle-class life. At the peak of her career, with a union-guaranteed wage and plenty of overtime work, she made roughly $70,000 a year.

After the plant closed, Current lost her home in foreclosure, and she now pays $560 a month for her own health care?a stretch, she says, when unemployment provides just $362 weekly, an amount that is due to be cut further because of the federal budget sequestration. Her 15-year-old son lives outside Washington with her ex-husband, a former electrical engineer for Ford who found that a civilian engineering job with the Navy was more stable than dealing with the automakers? constant restructuring.

Sitting in her union hall, Local 22, on a nearly deserted stretch of Michigan Avenue?the banner in front boasts, ?We Built This City??Current is more worried about her former coworkers than about herself. ?I knew I was bright enough that I could go reinvent myself and work somewhere else,? she says. Current is hoping to go back to school and find a program in workplace safety. But having been a union rep at the plant, ?I get calls from workers talking about committing suicide or losing their house,? she says. ?As a union, we?re not an employment agency, but you feel like you?re trying to carry the weight of the world to help people.?

About the only bit of luck Current has had is that housing in Detroit is worth next to nothing. After losing her home in the nearby suburb of Eastpointe, she bought a larger, nicer house on the east side of Detroit, a coup she savors. ?Things don?t stay bad forever,? she says.

Conscious Company, A Birchbox For Eco-Friendly Products, Raises $400K Seed Round Led By Birchmere Ventures

Conscious Company, a Portland, OR-based retail startup that lets its users subscribe to variety of different sample boxes it delivers once per month, just announced that it has closed a $400,000 seed round led by Birchmere Ventures and an undisclosed angel investor. Similar to Birchbox and comparable “box” startups, Conscious Company also runs an online store where its subscribers can then buy the products they have received in their Conscious Boxes. The company’s mission, its President and founder Jameson Morris told me earlier this week, is to help people discover natural product brands they would otherwise never be exposed to. Sampling, he told me, is a natural way to market these kind of products, which are often only available in specialty stores in urban areas. The company’s sample-tracking system allows it to ensure that its users never get the same samples twice. It also enables the company to work with small vendors who may only be able to offer 500 samples but want to get them to the right subscribers.?Conscious Company expects to use some of the new funding it raised to expand its tracking system. Conscious Company currently ships boxes to every state in the U.S., though the highest density of its subscribers can be found in New York, Los Angeles, Portland and San Francisco. As Morris told me, the typical subscriber is female and between 25 and 35. Surprisingly, most of the subscribers are new to natural products and are, in his words, “eco-curious.” Currently, most of the company’s revenue comes from its sample boxes, but sales from its online store are also growing and Morris expects them to overtake revenue from Conscious Box subscriptions in the future. Beside its standard box, the company also offers a gluten-free box and – unsurprisingly for a Portland-based startup – a vegan box. As Morris told me, the company also plans to start experimenting with specialty boxes (think “quit smoking kit,” “vegan starter kit,” etc.) later this year. As Morris also told me, before moving to a larger office in Portland, the team worked out of a small space in Santa Monica for a year while they bootstrapped the company.
