The Killer Presentation ... - Point2 Agent Real Estate Marketing Blog

Deliver Your Message with Impact. ?Real? Impact

Many books and presentation skill-building workshops describe techniques and methods that a presenter must employ and master in order to deliver their message with the most impact. You have likely come across all of these strategies at one point or another. Here are a few components we?ll concentrate on for the purpose of this article:

1)???? Discuss a subject you are passionate about, and don?t hold back on stage
2)???? Don?t read verbatim from your slides or notes
3)???? Make good eye contact
4)???? Use stories / anecdotes to make a point and engage people
5)???? Speak clearly and with confidence

The problem begins when each of those points are discussed and practiced as individual items.

A typical result, while completely unintended by the coach, book or participant, is a delivery that lacks charisma and conviction. Where passion is restrained by awkward, constructed eye contact attempts, or the odd scripted slide title and bullet point recital at some point during the presentation. Weakness becomes apparent to the audience and credibility gets a hit.

5c2f686f7a6271945f0381349c6ccc76 300x300 The Killer Presentation: Part Three

These five components are interlinked. They are part of a chain that should not have any weak links, otherwise things fall apart. Teaching a child five letters and stopping there is completely different from showing them how to interlink the five letters to make up words that have meaning, convey messages and generate intended actions and reactions.

Understanding this concept in the context of presentation skills is vital. Seamlessly integrating and applying the various components and techniques is a key catalyst. When this is achieved, delivering a message in a convincing manner happens naturally, virtually with no effort.

Here are the three fundamental elements that form the backbone to the entire structure:

i)????? You must know your subject inside out and be a huge believer in your ideas and thoughts around it.
ii)???? Have deep experience and insight around the subject. Meaning, you have real stories from the trenches to tell, that support your thoughts and views on the subject.
iii)?? Rehearse the presentation to death.

When these three components converge, the five presentation techniques discussed at the beginning of the article naturally become part of your delivery. In other words, you would be able to use the ?five letters learned? to form words that cause emotion and generate action.

You see, when you know your subject inside out, and you have relevant, important points and issues to convey, you get passionate, because you believe. You come across as more convincing and genuine. And since you rehearsed this thing as any professional should, you won?t need to read off your presentation slides.? Your words will flow like a story teller?s. Because you bring in experiences from the trenches to share, you will use stories to make and support your point, which engages the audience even more and gives your presentation the credibility it needs to make a difference and make an impression. When you have your message internalized and your stories up your sleeve, you will look at the audience as if you were talking to close friends at a party. Whether you are on stage or whether you are presenting your real estate marketing ideas and services to a new prospect, you will connect with them, and your eye contact will be legitimate and fluid; your voice will resonate conviction, knowledge and passion.

This is REAL impact.

Sony, Toshiba, Hitachi join forces in displays (AP)

TOKYO ? The display businesses of three major Japanese electronics makers are joining forces to become more competitive in small and medium-sized panels ? a sector that's expected to grow because of the popularity of smartphones and tablets.

The display-business subsidiaries of Sony Corp., Toshiba Corp. and Hitachi Ltd. agreed to sign a deal later this year and to complete the business combination by the first few months of next year, the companies said Wednesday.

Japanese media reports said the combined forces of the three companies will make them the world's No. 1 in small and medium-sized displays.

Japanese electronics makers have had a tough time fighting competition from Apple Inc. and its iPod and iPad hits as well as the display prowess of South Korean makers such as Samsung Electronics Co.

The latest move shows that the Japanese are determined to make a comeback but have decided they can't do it alone.

The companies said they think still have an edge in technological innovation in displays, but they have to act quickly because rivals are also investing in the sector.

The subsidiary shares will be transferred to a new company called Japan Display, which will be aggressive in research in new kinds of displays, including making them thinner and higher resolution, they said.

"By integrating each partner company's wealth of display expertise and know-how, I am confident the new company will become a driving force for technological innovation," said Sony Chairman and Chief Executive Howard Stringer.

Appeals court asked to vacate "Don't Ask" judgment (Reuters)

PASADENA, Calif (Reuters) ? Obama administration lawyers asked a federal appeals court on Thursday to vacate a judgment declaring "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" unconstitutional now that the ban on openly gay men and women in the military is about to be repealed.

But attorneys for opponents of the ban argued that the lower-court decision striking it down should be affirmed and left intact, preserving a legal precedent for anyone discharged under the policy who is seeking reinstatement, back pay or other recompense.

President Barack Obama in December signed a repeal of the 17-year ban into law, and announced last month that the repeal would take effect September 20 following months of preparation by the Pentagon to implement the policy change.

The administration has argued that the legal case against "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is therefore moot and the landmark judgment won last year by a gay rights group, the Log Cabin Republicans, should be vacated.

"This lawsuit has always been about ending 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.' Once 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' ends, in 19 days, this lawsuit is over," government attorney Henry Whitaker told a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

More than 13,000 gay men and lesbians have been expelled from the armed services for revealing their sexual orientation since the policy went into force in 1993 under then-President Bill Clinton.

Whitaker said the military already is accepting reenlistment from some of them.

Many, however, may be denied restoration of their old rank, while others who were less than honorably discharged will wish to upgrade their severance status to qualify for the G.I. Bill or veterans benefits, said attorney Dan Woods, representing the Log Cabin Republicans.

He also raised the possibility a future president or Congress might try to reinstate "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," or some variation of it, as some Republican presidential candidates have vowed to do.

"There's an election next year," Woods said. "These are some of the reasons the case is not moot 19 days from now."

A MOOT POINT?

Comments by two of the judges, Barry Silverman and Diarmuid O'Scannlain, hinted they were at least considering a dismissal of the case as moot.

Silver wondered aloud at one point whether there was "a public interest in letting the political process take its course." And when Woods mentioned next year's election, O'Scannlain snapped, "Come back next year."

Three months before Congress passed the repeal law, a federal judge in California handed gay activists a major victory last year by ruling that "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" infringed on the constitutional free-speech and due-process rights of homosexuals in the armed forces.

U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips put her decision into effect in October by ordering a halt to further enforcement of the ban, briefly requiring the military to welcome openly gay recruits for the first time.

But the 9th Circuit reversed her injunction in November, ruling that "Don't Ask" should remain in place pending a final outcome of the case.

The appeals court reinstated the injunction in early July, then partially reversed itself again 10 days later. As it currently stands, the ban on openly gay men and lesbians in uniform remains in effect, but the Pentagon is effectively barred from enforcing it.

It is now up to the 9th Circuit to decide whether to affirm or overturn Phillips' underlying decision declaring the gay ban unconstitutional. The court could otherwise throw the case out on grounds the Log Cabin Republicans lack standing or vacate Phillips' judgment as requested by the administration.

Woods said afterward that he did not expect a decision until after the repeal went into effect on September 20.

Hurricane Irene damaged tomatoes, other crops in Virginia (Reuters)

CHESAPEAKE, Va (Reuters) ? Virginia's tomato crop took a beating during Hurricane Irene, and corn, cotton and tobacco crops also suffered damage, according to preliminary reports.

Some 3,000 to 4,000 acres of tomatoes in Virginia's Eastern Shore were partially flattened and swamped, said Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services board member Steve Sturgis.

The loss could result in short-term supply issues, he said. Virginia is the nation's third or fourth-largest tomato producer, depending on the season, and Sturgis said it was his understanding that tomato growers in Florida would not start picking their crop for another three weeks.

"It could adversely affect supply because the Florida crop is not ready yet," he said.

Three commercial growers suffered losses: Pacific Tomato Growers, Kuzzens Incorporated, and East Coast Tomato Growers and Packers.

"These tomatoes are grown on stakes sticking five, six foot into the air," Sturgis said. "So you can imagine, you've got these walls of tomatoes, and when the wind comes and pushes on the wall, it just snaps those stakes off."

Butch Nottingham, the department's marketing representative for eastern Virginia, said the Eastern Shore harvest was "two-thirds to three-quarters of the way through" before Irene raked up the Atlantic coast on Saturday.

"I think it's a little early to tell just how much damage has been done," he said.

Donna Johnson, president of the Virginia Agribusiness Council, said the corn that was still in the field before the storm incurred "a lot of damage" and would be difficult to harvest while flattened.

The cotton crop will be "below average," soybeans are "probably okay" and tobacco took a hit in some places, she said.

Power outages were impeding producers' ability to dry and process crops, she said.

Virginia Cotton Board program director Gail Milteer said 95 percent of the 115,095 acres of cotton planted in Virginia this year have been damaged.

She could not put a dollar figure on the cotton loss statewide, but said Southampton County, Virginia's largest cotton producer with 46,720 acres, was claiming a $6.7 million loss.

"The greatest damage to our crops was along the I-95 corridor east, along the Virginia-North Carolina state line," she said, noting that area received seven to 16 inches of rain within 24 hours.

On the bright side, Dell Cotton, executive secretary for the Virginia Peanut Growers Association, said Hurricane Irene had benefited peanuts.

"There may be some areas where it was a little bit too much rain, but we were very dry before this came," he said, adding sunshine in coming days would guard against fungal diseases.

Scotland has no plans to demand Megrahi return (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Scotland said on Monday it had no plans to request the extradition of the Libyan convicted of the 1988 bombing of a U.S.-bound airliner over the Scottish town of Lockerbie.

Abdel Basset al-Megrahi was found guilty of bombing Pan Am flight 103 while en route from London to New York on December 21, 1988. A total of 270 people were killed.

Megrahi was sentenced to life imprisonment in Scotland in 2001, but released two years ago on compassionate grounds and returned to Libya because he was suffering from advanced terminal prostate cancer and thought to have months to live.

His release and return to a hero's welcome in Libya, coupled with his survival long beyond doctors' predictions, infuriated many in the United States -- home to most of the victims. Senior British politicians called for him to be returned to jail.

After some confusion over his whereabouts this week in the chaos accompanying the overthrow of long-time Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, media reported at the weekend that Megrahi was living in a palatial house in upmarket Tripoli, although a reporter who saw him said he seemed "at death's door."

Gaddafi's fall raised hopes among some for Megrahi's extradition to Scotland or the United States.

However, Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) said it had no intention of agreeing to any such request, and Scotland has no plans to make one.

"The only people with any legal entitlement to call for his return to Scotland are the Scottish government," Scottish First Minister Alex Salmon said in an e-mailed statement.

"We have never had -- and do not have -- any intention of asking for the extradition of Mr al-Megrahi, because he has conformed to his license conditions."

Mahmoud Shammam, NTC spokesman, told Reuters that Megrahi was not the rebels' main priority: "We understand that this issue is very important to some of our Western allies, but for now we are very busy with securing the country, number 1."

DUE PROCESS

Britain's Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has said he would like to see Megrahi back in jail. Prime Minister David Cameron, who took office in May 2010, has called the release a mistake.

However, Scotland is responsible for its own legal system.

"Perhaps if we all followed due process of law as the Scottish government has done and ceased the international politicking around this, then we could all be in a much better place," Salmond earlier told Sky News, in a barely veiled criticism of those who have attacked Megrahi's release.

"The views of American senators, of American lawyers, of the UK Foreign Secretary and of the Deputy Prime Minister have no bearing on this issue."

Salmond leads the Scottish National Party, which has run the country since 2007. Cameron's Conservatives, Clegg's Liberal Democrats and the Labour party which governed Britain at the time of Megrahi's release all sit in opposition to the SNP in the Scottish parliament in Edinburgh.

Scottish leaders have always defended their decision to show compassion to a dying man, in line with established Scottish policy. They reject suggestions the release was timed to help Britain win diplomatic and commercial favors from Gaddafi.

"The latest pictures broadcast of Mr al-Megrahi clearly demonstrate that he is an extremely sick man, dying of terminal prostate cancer. Hopefully, this will end the ridiculous conspiracy theories that seek to claim anything else," Salmond said in his statement.

DEATH'S DOOR

A CNN correspondent said on Sunday that he had found Megrahi in a house in an upmarket part of Tripoli, guarded by at least six security cameras and attended to by concerned relatives.

"He appears to be a shell of the man that he was, far sicker than he appeared before ... at death's door," the reporter said.

Sky News reported Megrahi's family as saying his cancer drugs had been stolen and he was slipping in and out of a coma.

Lockerbie residents interviewed by Reuters last week said they believed Megrahi should not have been released but were split on whether he should be extradited -- although none thought he should be sent to the United States.

Some people believe Megrahi was made a scapegoat for the bombing. Others hoped that once Gaddafi -- at whose rallies Megrahi appeared -- fell from power, the alleged former Libyan intelligence service officer would be able to provide more information on whoever ordered the bombing.

"Even if he were to be questioned, Megrahi will have nothing to add to the fact that he claims innocence of involvement in the atrocity," said Jim Swire, whose daughter Flora died in the bombing, and who has previously described Megrahi's conviction as a "terrible parody of justice."

"However, we should remember that he was a member of the Libyan intelligence service at the time of his handover for trial and therefore for all I know he may have some evidence against other people in the Libyan regime," he told Sky News.
