Tropical Storm Barry headsforms off Mexican coast

VERACRUZ, Mexico (AP) ? The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Barry is bearing down on Mexico's Gulf Coast, poised to make landfall within hours.

The Miami-based center said the storm was about 30 miles (45 kilometers) north of the port city of Veracruz early Thursday and heading west at 5 mph (7 kph). Barry, which has sustained 45-mph (75-kph) winds, is expected to make landfall northwest of that city.

Forecasters say the Atlantic hurricane season's second tropical storm is drenching areas in its path with between 3 and 10 inches of rain. They say the storm could cause life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides.

The center predicts Barry will weaken and dissipate Friday while moving inland over southern Mexico. A tropical storm warning is in effect from Punta El Lagarto to Tuxpan, Mexico.
