I love Cracked but the article while entertaining doesn?t do it for me. I don?t see how America?s culture and history differ from any other. Germans did the Holocaust, The British spent most of history trying to pillage the entire planet by sticking flags in it as id the Spanish, One of the most recognisable figures in Japanese history is a samurai also they did that thing with Germany where they tried to take over the world , hell I?m from Northern Ireland which has something of a rep for violence. Yet the gun crime in those countries is nowhere near what it is in the States. Saying the US has a bloodier history than anywhere else is foolish and shows a majorly skewed understanding of other nations histories.
Then it kind of devolves into jingoistic claptrap for a bit but id like to make the point, every nation is a nation of warriors that?s why they are still nations. The implication that America is the only nation have fought for freedom is actually insulting and ignorant. (This is a weakness in the article and I?m not suggesting you hold this belief.)
Every country supports their troops, maybe not always the mission but in the UK we love people who serve the country we just don?t get all bleary eyed about it like our American Cousins. As for becoming a ?nation of pussies? that implies other nations are pussies because we don?t shoot school children. The culture argument falls for the same reasons the historical one falls. In the UK we watch the same TV shows as you (I love 24, yet don?t see torture as a solution to any problems) and despite the hero of the most watched film in the UK this year being that lovable misogynistic drunk that shoots people, James Bond, we don?t run around shooting each other up.
My point is globalisation has broken down cultural enclaves that were once divided by space. They?re watching the same stuff in France that you?re watching in the US in fact if I remember correctly the French love Criminal Minds.
On to my next point which involves my home. Belfast has been victim to some riotous behaviour at the moment and has been for a number of weeks however to my knowledge there have been no deaths. Yet stones, bottles and petrol bombs have been lobbed at police in an effort to kill someone.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-20671528 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-20589957 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-20876971
I don?t think these people would hesitate to use a gun if they had one available. Good thing they don?t, unlike in America where it?s way too easy to kill a lot of people, very quickly.
These proposals seem fair to gun owners while also being sensible and I don?t see how they criminalise ?law abiding citizens?. Hunters can still hunt under these laws unless you?re hunting with an Uzi in which case you really gotta ask you taking the sport seriously. Laws change with the times to reflect the feeling of society, happens all the time. It?s the citizen?s choice whether or not they wish to move with the times and live by the law or not. If not I hear prison is lovely this time of year.
Oh and as for the drunk driver thing. http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/gun ... 32492.html Oh and additionally drunk drivers don?t have the intent to kill people they just don?t want to order a taxi, the intent is entirely different from pointing a firing a weapon. Finally guns guns fire hot metallic death that is designed to kill someone, the marketing people use words like ?stopping power? I have yet to see a car advertise it?s ?stopping power? (unless you?re talking about brakes, ha it?s a joke, I can be funny.)
To be real for a second I don?t see these laws passing. The firearms industry is way too large to let this happen so they?ll keep rolling out insane ideas like Teachers packing heat. The industry has made the debate into one of freedom and personal choice knowing that these words are very emotive for Americans despite actual definitions being thin on the ground. The debate should actually be about safety but instead it?s framed in terms of screaming eagles and statements like ?becoming a nation of pussies?. If it helps at the last annual UK national meeting we decided we?re probably not going to invade the US so you don?t have to worry about the ?King of England? sticking a gun in your face.
To me it seems like American?s are willing the trade lives for guns and that?s set to continue for the foreseeable future.
