Apple's iPad mini is the most popular tablet this Christmas, according to new research.
Statista, a leading statistics research company, has found that the iPad mini has been the most searched for tablet in the 7in market in the run up to Christmas, suggesting that Apple's 7.9in device, which hit the shelves at the beginning of November, will be wrapped up under many people's trees this year.
Between 14 November and 11 December 'iPad mini' was searched for significantly more than Google's 'Nexus 7' and Amazon's 'Kindle Fire', according to the data collected by Statista from Google Trends. SEE: iPad mini vs Nexus 7 vs Kindle Fire HD displays tested to the limit
Interestingly, 'iPad 3' and 'iPad 4' were the least searched terms out of the five tablets during the 30-day period, indicating a rise in interest in smaller tablet devices rather than the original 10in versions.
Meanwhile, a new survey of more than 1,000 US consumers by Morgan Stanley and AlphaWise found that 47 per cent of iPad mini buyers are new to Apple, compared with 56 per cent of buyers of Apple's 10in iPad.
Analyst Katy Huberty said that, although iPad mini sales are taking some of Apple's full-size iPad sales, the concerns over cannibalization have been "overblown," and that the survey's results show that the risk for Apple is "manageable."
Separate statistics from Localytics found that the iPad mini accounted for just two per cent of overall iPad traffic during November. But Statista's research, resolved supply issues, plus new reports that suggest high iPad mini demand has led Apple to increase its 7in display orders to 12 million in quarter four of 2012, could mean a successful future for Apple's little tablet.
