30 December 2011 Last updated at 02:21 ETMost of Japan?s losses this year occurred on two days in March
Japan?s main share index has closed at its lowest end-of-year level since 1982.
The Nikkei 225 index finished Friday up 0.7% to 8,455.35
Stocks have been hit by a weak global economy, as well as a devastating earthquake and tsunami on 16 March that left 20,000 people dead or missing and sparked a nuclear crisis.
Shares have lost a fifth of their value this year, with the majority of losses in the two days following the disaster.
The disaster severely disrupted manufacturing at carmakers such as Toyota and electronics firms such as Sony.
Shares in Tepco, the owner of the Fukushima nuclear power plant that became the focus of an effort to prevent a meltdown, dropped 91% this year.
But housebuilder SXL, which has participated in reconstruction work, has seen its shares jump more than 260% this year.
The Nikkei is still more than 10% above the low of 7,621.92 it set in October 2008, in the aftermath of the global financial crisis. But Japanese shares rallied back strongly in the last two months of that year to finish above this year?s level.

Small-cap Chinese companies continue to leave a sour taste in the mouth of investors as uncertainty remains rampant over the validity of their financials and auditing practices. As the reverse merger scandal placed into question the sector as a whole, money has flowed out of these small-cap companies at a rapid pace. Not only has this hurt equity holders, but has deterred others from venturing further. It's also made it possible for a few otherwise unlikely scenarios to occur.
Perhaps one of the more interesting situations was the controversy over Harbin Electric (HRBN) which waged a war of trust between the company and short-seller firm Citron Research. In the most unlikely of scenarios, Citron had come out with a research piece asserting fraud at Harbin that proceeded to cut the share price in half within a day. Soon after, the company announced a buyout of the company?s stock that sent the market soaring the opposite direction but coming nowhere near the buyout price. Over the next few months, even with much affirmation by the company, the share price only ever so slowly gained confidence in the buyout?s reality despite continued protest from Citron. Eventually, the buyout occurred and the company was taken private.
In another ongoing instance, we see the case of China Advanced Construction Materials Group, Inc (CADC). Also hit hard under the sentiment over Chinese reverse mergers, this company with a book value double the current share price, has managed to entertain and pass a buyout offer from the CEO to acquire the company for $2.65/share. With a book value of $4.89/sh according to Yahoo Finance, many would decry this as being far from fair. Yet even after its announcement, the reaction by the investor public was but mildly responsive. Shares at one point managed to trade back down to $1.50 despite the ongoing buyout procedures. One could easily blame the board of directors' poor handling of the offer for allowing this to occur. However, in another sense, with the amount of time given for the market to react, the market's poor reception to the idea can be seen as proof enough that the buyout was the best offer available.
For many shareholders in such Chinese companies, these situations are proving to be disappointing at best. Many had bought shares at much higher prices before these companies had fallen out of favor. Practices that wouldn?t normally be tolerated had the sentiment been different are leaving these small-cap investors vulnerable from two sides: Bears (as was the case with HRBN) and Management (as is the opportunistic case for CADC).
Many of these companies continue to remain severely undervalued from the sense of book value. As most Chinese reverse mergers had listed onto the US market to raise capital (witnessed by the number that committed at least one shelf offering), there is the ongoing threat of why a wealthy CEO wouldn?t pursue a buyout at such low prices that investors are willing to place on the companies.
Here?s a quick look at a few reverse merger companies in terms of market capitalization (12/26/11), net tangible assets (most recent quarter), and insider ownership (according to Yahoo Finance):
Company | Market Cap | NTA | Insider% |
---|---|---|---|
China Automotive Systems (CAAS) | $100.5 M | $163.4 M | 73.94% |
Fushi Copperweld (FSIN) | $293.8 M | $369.6 M | 44.98% |
Feihe International (ADY) | $55.5 M | $183.9 M | 51.15% |
Yuhe International (YUII) | $15.2 M | $113.2 M | 39.32% |
Yongye International (YONG) | $196.6 M | $277.0 M | 22.18% |
Zhongpin (HOGS) | $323.3 M | $407.6 M | 37.07% |
Skystar Bio Pharmaceutical (SKBI) | $20.1 M | $79.4 M | 19.90% |
SmartHeat (HEAT) | $13.0 M | $118.4 M | 37.29% |
China Natural Gas (CHNG) | $41.4 M | $189.8 M | 28.99% |
China Marine Food Group (CMFO) | $38.3 M | $104.6 M | 60.12% |
China Sky One Medical (CSKI) | $20.1 M | $106.1 M | 37.12% |
Additional note: In perhaps an astonishing vote of confidence in the board?s ability to keep management under check, Fushi Copperweld (FSIN) successfully rejected a buyout offer by the CEO on December 5, 2011. Perhaps there?s hope yet for shareholders who have already so little trust in the companies they hold.
Disclosure: I am long CMFO.

YANGON, Myanmar ? A fire followed by several explosions engulfed state warehouses and neighboring homes in Myanmar's main city of Yangon on Thursday, killing at least 17 people and injuring 108.
The blasts occurred as firefighters were putting out the fire that had started in a state-owned warehouse before spreading to other warehouses and nearby homes and buildings before dawn.
Six of the dead were firefighters, a home ministry source said. He did not want to be identified because he is not authorized to speak to the media.
He added the fire and blasts destroyed 16 warehouses, a Buddhist monastery and 76 homes in Mingalar Taung Nyunt township in eastern Yangon.
A total of 108 injured people were brought to Yangon General Hospital, said a senior nurse. The nurse did not want to be identified because she is not authorized to speak to the media.
"Many of the dead were hit by flying debris of broken walls and stone slabs that were flung on to the streets due to the explosions," Maung Win, a 45-year-old resident, told the Associated Press.
The explosions rocked the entire city, jolting residents from sleep. A 20-foot (6-meter) -wide and 15-foot (4.5-meter) -deep crater was visible at the site. Black smoke was seen billowing from the rubble Thursday morning.
Firefighters were searching for bodies from among the debris.
It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, but the home ministry official said the explosions were due to chemicals, including ammonia and potassium nitrate, stored in one of the warehouses.
Residents said the fire started in a warehouse that stored electronic goods then spread to other warehouses and houses.

PERRIS, Calif.?? An experienced Canadian skydiver died at a Southern California drop zone after landing hard while attempting a high-speed maneuver known as "swooping," authorities said Wednesday.
Michael Ungar, 32, died Tuesday afternoon at Perris Valley Skydiving, about 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles. It was the sixth death at the parachuting facility in the last 15 months.
Witnesses said Unger's parachute was open as he made the difficult maneuver and landed in a shallow pond. Friends pulled him out of the water, the Riverside County coroner and Perris police said in a news release.
Swooping involves a high-speed dive to skim over the ground before landing. Parachutists are often traveling 40 mph vertically and up to 60 mph horizontally just before touching down on the ground.
"It's risky because you are moving so fast," said Jim Crouch, the safety director for the Fredericksburg, Va.-based United State Parachuting Association. "A lot of jumpers choose to land this way because it's exciting. But it's very unforgiving."
Accidents occur when parachutists start the maneuver too low and the parachute doesn't have the ability to recover, or fill with air, and float the skydiver to the ground, Crouch said.
The maneuver has become so popular there are swooping competitions at drop zones around the country, said Crouch, who describes it as "a sport within a sport."
There have now been four sport parachuting swooping deaths nationwide this year, Crouch said. The highest death count involving the maneuver was seven in 2002. There were six in 2006 and four last year.
"Jumpers are getting safer with this type of skydiving, (but) you can never completely take the risk out of it," Crouch said.
The 33,000-member United States Parachute Association promotes safe skydiving through training, licensing and instructor-qualification programs.
There are more than 140,000 jumps each year at Perris Valley Skydiving, one of the most active of 140 drop zones in the United States. Tuesday's accident marks at least the 14th death at the Perris facility since 2000 and the fifth this year.
Only on msnbc.com
"It's been a bad year for them," Crouch said. "I know they have been working on getting everybody to jump as safe as possible.
"It's a high-volume drop zone. The percentage doesn't point to them doing anything out of the ordinary."
Perris Valley Skydiving center manager Dan Brodsky-Chenfeld said Ungar, of Ontario, sometimes worked as an instructor at Skydive Hollister on California's Central Coast. Ungar, who had 2,000 jumps to his credit, was visiting the Perris area and had rarely, if ever, jumped at the facility, Brodsky-Chenfeld said.
Ungar's parachute was open and he was circling as he neared the ground, witness Jack Nix, of Fontana, told the Riverside Press-Enterprise. But when he did not pull up or turn his body upright from parallel to the ground, Nix said he knew the skydiver was in trouble.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the air safety regulator only investigates such deaths to determine whether the parachute was packed properly by a certified packer.
Local authorities were investigating the Ungar's death. Other recent fatal accidents at Perris:
? In April, two skydivers collided, killing Jacob Jensen, 32, of Denmark. The other man survived critical injuries.
? Two skydivers were killed in March when their parachutes deflated and they fell 300 feet.
? In February, a 41-year-old Australian woman died after failing to open a backup chute.
? In September 2010, a 51-year-old Russian man died after a solo jump. The man's body was not found until two months later by a farmer plowing a field. His parachutes had not been deployed.

OMAHA, Neb. -- An Omaha boy, followed by KETV as he bravely battled brain cancer, died last week shortly after turning 11 years old.The first time KETV met Evan Sharp in September of 2010, he smiled at the camera and spoke two simple words: ?I?m amazing.?Evan was 9 at the time, diagnosed months earlier with a brain tumor. A teacher noticed changes in Evan?s handwriting around the same time his parents noticed he was having trouble at baseball, leading to the diagnosis. After spending a summer undergoing surgery and months of chemotherapy and radiation, Evan returned to class. He spent his 4th grade year studying, laughing with friends, and undergoing more treatment.KETV followed up with Evan in May of 2011. It seemed like a miracle had taken place; it appeared Evan?s tumor was gone.Evan returned to the baseball field with his team. Though still unable to play, Evan cheered from the dugout and was proud to say he had rolled in the dirt before the game started. Evan led the team chant during the huddle after the game and laughed as his teammates heckled him during his interview.?If you do get this type of cancer, or any type of cancer, just hope and pray it doesn't come back,? Evan told KETV Newswatch 7?s Brandi Petersen. ?That's what I did and it worked.?Just weeks after that story aired, Evan started showing symptoms again. In August, a scan confirmed a tumor in Evan?s brain stem.Evan faced more treatment and more difficult challenges as his condition worsened, but he still projected a positive attitude.Former Nebraska standout and current New York Yankee Joba Chamberlain visited Evan in the fall. Evan, a huge baseball fan, got to talk to the baseball player and get a jersey signed. Joba told Evan he?d get him tickets for the Yankees opening day game in the spring.Evan died Wednesday night at home, surrounded by his family. He just turned 11 the week before.Monday, the day after Christmas, Evan?s family told him goodbye during a private funeral service. They will hold a public service the night of January 8 at Christ Community Church. His mother, Rhonda Sharp, told KETV Monday that Evan would not want people to be sad at Christmas. One viewer who emailed KETV after Evan?s death wrote ?Evan earned his angel wings.?If there?s baseball in Heaven, no doubt Evan is out on the field, smiling.Watch KETV Newswatch 7 at 10 for a tribute to Evan Sharp.Copyright 2011 by KETV.com. PYONGYANG, North Korea ? A South Korean mourning delegation returned home Tuesday after meeting with North Korea's next leader, who has rapidly gained prominence since his father's death.
Kim Jong Un's brief meeting Monday with a group led by a former South Korean first lady and a prominent business leader shows Seoul that he is assured in his new role atop the country's ruling structure.
The South Koreans also met with Kim Yong Nam, president of Presidium of North Korea's parliament, according to footage from Associated Press Television News in Pyongyang. He often represents the country and is considered a nominal head of state.
The sides agreed to push for the implementation of 2000 and 2007 summit agreements between the countries aimed at expanding economic cooperation, the North's official Korean Central News Agency said briefly. A spokesman for one of the delegations later confirmed that the summit deals, which would benefit the North financially, were discussed.
The lead delegates were the widow of former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, who engineered a "sunshine" engagement policy with the North and held a landmark summit with Kim Jong Il in 2000, and Hyundai Group Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun, whose late husband had ties to the North. North Korea sent delegations to Seoul when the women's husbands died.
During Kim Jong Un's meeting with the South Koreans, he thanked them after they expressed condolences and sympathy over his father's death. Kim Jong Il died Dec. 17.
They stood on a red carpet and bowed silently at the Kumsusan palace, where Kim Jong Il's bier is surrounded by flowers and flanked by an honor guard, footage from APTN in Pyongyang showed. Kim Jong Un and the two women later exchanged handshakes and clasped their hands when they spoke briefly. Their conversations were inaudible.
Mourning continued, meanwhile, despite frigid winter weather, in the final days before Kim Jong Il's funeral on Wednesday.
People continued lining up in central Pyongyang's Kim Il Sung Square, where a massive portrait that usually features Kim Il Sung has been replaced by one of Kim Jong Il, to bow before his smiling image and to lay funeral flowers. Heated buses stood by to give mourners a respite from the cold, and hot tea and water were distributed from beverage kiosks.

Britney Spears is making this holiday season memorable with gifts to her fans - and we're not just talking about her engagement to Jason Trawick, nice as that was.
Earlier, she released a new/old song, "Strangest Love," reportedly recorded (but never released) for 2003's In The Zone. Now another new song has surfaced online.
It's an acoustic version of “Don’t Keep Me Waiting,” which was clearly enhanced with production on the album version. But this one is fun to listen to in its own way.

Every year, thousands of men receive the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Because of the high number of men afflicted with this disease, annual screening tests have been put into place to hopefully catch prostate cancer in its early stages. A number of tests also exist to confirm the presence of prostate cancer after an abnormality is found through screening.
All men over the age of 50 should be screened annually for prostate cancer. African-American men and men with a strong family history of prostate cancer have been shown to have higher rates of prostate cancer and need to start their screening at age 40 (or even earlier if family members have developed prostate cancer at younger ages).
Additionally, any men who have symptoms suggestive of prostate cancer need to undergo testing.
Appropriate screening involves both a yearly digital rectal exam and prostate specific antigen blood test.
During this exam, the physician inserts a lubricated, gloved finger (digit) into the rectum. Because of the prostate?s location just in front of the rectum, the physician is able to feel the edge of the prostate where the majority of cancers begin. Abnormalities such as bumps or hardness of the prostate can be detected in this way.
This test is usually completed in 5 to 10 seconds and most men have little discomfort during it.
A small sample of blood is taken and then sent to a lab for analysis. PSA is a protein that is only produced by prostate cells. As the prostate enlarges, whether due to cancer or another cause, the amount of PSA produced increases.
High levels of PSA or rapid increases in the PSA level can alert the physician to a possible underlying cancer.
If an abnormality is found on the DRE or the PSA test, the physician will typically order a biopsy of the prostate.
A biopsy involves taking a very small sample of tissue from the prostate. This is done using a thin needle that is placed into the prostate. A tiny amount of tissue is trapped in the needle while it is in the prostate and then the needle is pulled out. This is repeated in a number of locations throughout the prostate so as to minimize the chance of missing an area where cancer may is present.
This procedure is usually done by an urologist or other surgeon in their office and involves using local anesthesia to minimize pain.
The tissue samples are then sent to a pathologist (a specialized physician who diagnoses diseases based on their appearance under a microscope) who makes the final diagnosis of prostate cancer.
At this time, the pathologist can also look at the cancer cells to determine how abnormal they are. This is called the cancer?s ?grade?. A high grade means that the cells are very abnormal and that the cancer is more likely to spread.
An excellent video is available that illustrates how a prostate biopsy works.
Testing does not stop after the pathologist has determined whether or not cancer is present. In order to treat the cancer effectively, the physicians caring for you must know how far the cancer has spread.
To determine this, a number of tests can be used. Your physician will determine which of these are the best choices for your particular situation, but all work to detect cancer that has spread outside of the prostate.
All of these tests help to determine how far the cancer has spread or the ?stage? of your cancer. Staging helps your physician determine the best treatment option for you.

Edna Tasten receives a Christmas dinner from Danny Friedman as David Tasten watches. About 20 volunteers associated with Temple Israel helped serve Christmas dinner at Union Gospel Mission on Sunday. Several of the volunteers wore caps like Freidman?s, with the Hebrew phrase ?Tikkun olam? written on them. The phrase means ?repairing the world,? and has come to connote social action or community service. (Steve Kuchera / skuchera@duluthnews.com)

About 20 volunteers from Temple Israel gathered at the Union Gospel Mission in Duluth on Sunday afternoon to serve Christmas dinner and carry on a tradition that?s been 30-plus years in the making. But one familiar face was missing this year.
Shirley Garber, a temple member who helped launch the volunteer initiative with her late husband, Jack, died in September at age 90. The couple operated a catering business that long held the contract at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. And while she had not been up to working at the event the past couple years, Garber still always attended, said Tom Griggs, who now organizes the dinner with his wife, Pam.
?I feel that she?s still up there watching down on us,? said Pam Griggs of Garber Sunday.
The Griggs were tapped by Garber about five or six years ago to oversee the event.
?She was a very smart woman. She knew you need to have a successor plan,? Tom Griggs said.
Gary Gordon, another volunteer from the temple, said those lending a hand Sunday were demonstrating their commitment to ?tikkun olam,? a Hebrew phrase that translates roughly into the idea of repairing the world through community service.
Judy Gordon joined her husband at the event, as she has for several years running. She said by having temple volunteers step
forward, many of the Union Gospel Mission?s staff and regular volunteers can take the day off.
?We see this as an opportunity to give back and allow Christians to spend Christmas with their families,? she said.
Despite the volunteer help, James Bogie showed up for work at the mission Sunday to make sure all ran smoothly. But he said staff was quite thankful for the holiday help.
?We?re here and open 365 days per year. It?s real nice for some of our staff to have a little break,? he said.
Dinner guests at the mission also said they were grateful for the spread, which included turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberries, corn and pie. Several temple members came in Saturday to begin preparations for the meal.
So many volunteers offered their services Sunday that it was sometimes difficult to keep them occupied. Judy Gordon said volunteers who weren?t busy with other chores were encouraged to sit down and visit with guests, too.
?To be alone on Christmas can be a sad feeling,? she said.
Frank Effinger didn?t seem particularly perturbed about being on his own for the holidays, however.
?To me, Christmas ain?t anything but another day of the year,? he said, as he tucked into dinner at the Union Gospel Mission.
Still, Effinger expressed thanks for the food and companionship the dinner provided. ?Everyone needs some company,? he said.
Nori Pribble, another Union Gospel Mission regular, said that while many at Sunday?s dinner didn?t have relatives with whom to spend the holidays, they had each other.
?We?re all family here,? Pribble said. ?We care about one another.?
With Sunday falling on the sixth day of Hanukkah, the Jewish holiday overlaps with Christmas this year. But Gary Gordon said most Hanukkah festivities take place at night, not during the afternoon hours, so there was little sacrifice to make in temple members offering their services Christmas day.

Economic experts confirmed that the Yemeni economy was suffering greatly even before the crisis, but the political unrest exacerbated the situation.
Dr. Mohammad al-Maitami, a professor of economics at Sana?a University have said? "Tens of thousands of small businesses stopped working, leading to tens of thousands of workers losing their jobs, and many business people lost their capital because of the disruptions."
Al-Maitami called the economy "the focal point of the political process, and the root of the humanitarian problems".
He said commodity prices have risen seven-fold, especially after the absence of oil derivatives from the market, which will lead to higher inflation this year.
"These losses cannot be regained in a short period of time, and hard work is required to mitigate the negative effects on the economy and subsequently achieve partial stability," al-Maitami said.
The cabinet approved Monday the national reconciliation government's general program, which is to be submitted to the parliament soon.
In its meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mohammed Salem Basindwa, the cabinet assigned Higher Education and Scientific Research Minister and the cabinet's secretary general to revise the program taking the ministers' notes into consideration.
The program is based on the constitution, Gulf initiative and its executive mechanism in addition to the draft 4th four-year plan for socio-economic development and poverty reduction 2011 ? 2015.
It targets a set of priorities the government will focus on to tackle the challenges Yemen is facing currently.
In the political area, the government will mobilize all national efforts in order to restore political stability and security, create the suitable environment to achieve safe and peaceful transfer of power, respect human rights and carry out the youths' legitimate demands for change.
Economically, the government puts returning the affected basic services in its urgent priorities, topped by electricity and oil derivatives.
The government will seeks to convince the fraternal and friendly States to establish a special international fund for Yemen to finance priority projects for governorates' development and contract with consulting firms to prepare the required studies and select companies to carry out them.
In addition, it will set up a fund to present monthly assistances for families of killed and wounded people and to hospitalize the wounded people abroad if required.
The government will form committees to contact with youth movements all over the country to discuss and involve them in determining the country's future.

Everyone seems to overlook Drew Brees as being a product of today's pass-happy game, but he's a legitimate Hall of Famer, NBCSports.com contributor Mike Tanier writes.
updated 4:22 p.m. ET Dec. 25, 2011
|
Brees is just 304 yards shy of Dan Marino?s single-season passing record of 5,084 yards, meaning that he might break the record by the fourth quarter of Monday night?s game against the Falcons. Ho-hum, you say: Passing records fall every season. Except that Marino?s standard has held for 27 years, and only one other quarterback has ever surpassed 5,000 yards: None other than Brees, who threw for 5,069 yards in 2008.
Brees? pursuit of Marino?s milestone has gotten the ?oh, by the way? treatment from some outlets, while a few analysts cared just enough to give Bress the Roger Maris brush-off. ?Brees' record will be severely watered down. So much so, that it almost deserves an asterisk," wrote Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com, alluding to today?s liberal passing rules and strategies.
Last week, Brees became the 13th quarterback in NFL history to surpass 40,000 career passing yards. You might have missed the fanfare and the parade: The story got buried in the stats ?n? notes section of most sports sections outside of Louisiana. Brees will pass Johnny Unitas on the all-time yardage list before breaking Marino?s record, and he could also pass Joe Montana by season?s end. It?s not clear what punctuation marks he must use as apologies for passing those legends: Maybe an ampersand and a pound sign, harsh symbols for our ?severely watered down? times. When not cruising past Marino, Unitas, and Montana, Brees is being a solid citizen about his contract situation. He becomes a free agent in March, but negotiations on a new deal have been tabled until the offseason. Saints president Mickey Loomis has praised Brees for not letting the slow/nonexistent negotiations become a distraction, but Loomis has not exactly sped things along, either. Apparently, things have become so severely watered down 31-year old all-time record holders just grow on trees.
Granted, Brees is getting some props: He is often mentioned as this year?s ?runner-up MVP,? and the Saints are quietly 11-3, in the playoffs, and in good position to wrap up the second seed in the NFC. But Brees deserves to be seen as more than a runner-up. He deserves a heck of a lot better than the asterisk treatment. Brees is a future Hall of Famer, and he should be acknowledged as one of the best quarterbacks, not just of this generation, but of any generation.
In good company
Yes, Brees is a Hall of Famer. He?s not a Hall of Famer if he wins another Super Bowl, or if he has three more good years, or if he breaks the right combination of records. He is a Hall of Famer even if he announces before kickoff Monday that he is giving up football for tiddlywinks. Brees is not ?on his way.? He is there.
Brees is about to be named to his sixth Pro Bowl and has led his team to a Super Bowl victory. Every eligible quarterback in history with six Pro Bowls and a ring has made the Hall of Fame. In fact, the only quarterback in history with six Pro Bowl selections who is not in the Hall of Fame is John Hadl, the Chargers legend who earned much of his all-star notice in the wild-and-woolly days of the early AFL. Brees? record blows away top Hall of Fame argument starters such as Ken Stabler (four Pro Bowls, one ring) and Ken Anderson (four Pro Bowls, zero rings). Brees fits much more comfortably among second-tier Hall members such as Dan Fouts (six Pro Bowls, zero rings) and Bobby Layne (five Pro Bowls, two rings), well above the Joe Namath-George Blanda class of quarterbacks who made the cut for other contributions. You can argue that multiple Pro Bowl appearances were harder for old-time quarterbacks to achieve, because careers were shorter, but Brees is only 31 years old, and we are giving him zero credit for what he might accomplish in the next decade.
Counting Super Bowls and all-star appearances is a rather simple-minded way of ranking quarterbacks. But we cannot use statistics, because Brees blows the field away. He has the highest career completion percentage in history of any quarterback with over 3,000 pass attempts. He is two touchdowns away from passing Montana for 10th on the all-time touchdown list. Brees, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are carving the record book up in unequal thirds, or at least all the parts of the record book that Favre didn?t shred by trying to play until the sun went nova. Give Brees five more modest seasons in the 3,000-yard, 20-touchdown range (and account for Brady's having similar production), and Brees will retire among the top five quarterbacks in every meaningful category. And despite our ?watered-down? times, Brees? totals will stick: Other than Brady, other quarterbacks in Brees? age group (Tony Romo, Eli Manning, and the like) are thousands of yards and many touchdowns behind.
Brees lacks an MVP award, but he has a shelf full of everything else: the Bert Bell Award, Offensive Player of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, Super Bowl MVP and the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, which acknowledges community service as well as on-field success. This is not the resume of a borderline Hall of Fame candidate; it is overwhelming evidence of greatness, a slam dunk that is only going to rattle backboards even harder after a few more seasons like the past five.

TV Guide:
From Oprah's surprisingly low-key farewell to the year's most soul-crushing break-up on "The Good Wife" (Kalicia, no!), the year was packed with fantastic hours of television -- pretty much all of which we watched. There were teary goodbyes ("Friday Night Lights's" Texas forever! "Smallville's" tights and flights!), tense face-offs (why can't all CIA interrogations take place on the front porch of a cabin, like on "Homeland"?) and of course we made room for a little "Glee" (because certain underdogs deserved it).

KANO, Nigeria (Reuters) ? Clashes between a violent Islamist sect and security forces in Nigeria's northeastern city of Damaturu have killed at least 24 people in the past day, police said on Friday.
A sustained gun battle broke out between Nigerian security forces and suspected Islamist militants in Damaturu on Thursday, and several explosions were heard.
Then on Friday suspected sect members opened fire on a group of policemen shortly after Friday prayers in the city, killing four, local police officials said.
Police commissioner Lawan Tanko of Yobe state, of which Damaturu is the capital, told Reuters a dusk to dawn curfew had been imposed on the city.
"The situation is now calm. We lost seven security men and twelve members of the Boko Haram sect were killed in the shoot out last night," he said.
"Though you cannot predict members of the sect, our men and the military are combat ready. Only one civilian was killed (in the violence on Thursday)."
Confrontations between security forces and the Boko Haram sect have become increasingly frequent in the past couple of weeks, as the north's simmering conflict escalates, though the insurgency remains low level and sporadic.
Nigerian police arrested 14 suspected members of Boko Haram and seized explosives after a gun battle left four militants and three policemen dead in the city of Kano last weekend.
Lawan said the fighting in Damaturu broke out after his men raided a suspected Boko Haram hideout.
Damaturu was the scene of the most deadly Boko Haram assault to date, when 65 people were killed in a wave of shootings and bombings on November 5 that left churches, police stations and mosques reduced to smoldering rubble.
At least 11 people were killed in a separate shootout in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, Boko Haram's heartland, on Thursday, an official at the morgue said.
Morturary attendant Bab Aminu said he had received the bodies overnight.
Boko Haram, whose name roughly translates as "Western learning is forbidden" has been blamed for scores of shootings and bombings in the north, including a spate of attacks in the past few weeks across the region.
Despite many crackdowns, Nigerian security forces have so far been unable to contain Boko Haram violence. This year the group struck in the capital Abuja twice, including a suicide car bomb attack against the U.N. headquarters that killed 26 people.

CINCINNATI (AP) ? The Cincinnati Reds acquired left-handed reliever Sean Marshall from the Chicago Cubs on Friday for young lefty starter Travis Wood and two other players.
It was the second time in a week that the Reds gave up several prospects for pitching help. They earlier sent four players, including Edinson Volquez, to San Diego for starter Mat Latos.
The 29-year-old, 6-foot-7 Marshall was 6-6 with a 2.26 ERA last season. He had five saves. The Reds have been in talks to try to re-sign closer Francisco Cordero, who became a free agent after last season.
"Sean has been one of the best and most durable relievers in baseball the last couple of seasons," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said in a statement.
The 24-year-old Wood made 35 starts for the Reds over two seasons. He finished 6-6 with a 4.84 ERA in 2011, with a stint in Triple-A after struggling early in the year.
The Cubs also get 24-year-old outfielder Dave Sappelt, who batted .243 in 38 games with the Reds, and 19-year-old infield prospect Ronald Torreyes, who batted .356 in 67 games for Class-A Dayton.
"Twenty-four-year old left-handed starters who have already had success in the big leagues don't grow on trees," Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said. "We had to give up a great relief pitcher in Sean Marshall and someone we were proud to call a Cub, but we think to acquire Wood and the two young guys, it was worth doing."
Wood made 17 starts for the Reds in 2010, going 5-4 with a 3.51 ERA. He took a perfect game into the ninth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies before giving up a double to Carlos Ruiz, and left after finishing the ninth with the game scoreless.
Wood began last season in the Reds' starting rotation, made 10 starts for Louisville, then returned to Cincinnati. He also had four relief appearances for Cincinnati.
"He had a little bit of a down year last year, a little bit of a sophomore slump, but we still think all the ingredients are there to make him an excellent starting pitcher in the big leagues and you tend to not be able to get guys like that after their strong rookie years," Epstein said. "But sometimes you have a chance to get them after they take a little bit of their lumps on the learning curve."
Wood said he relied too heavily on his cutter last season and "lost the ability to really stick that four-seam (fastball) in there." His control was off, but he also sees a shot at redemption in Chicago.
"I think it's a great opportunity for me," he said. "The Reds do have a lot of depth in their rotation. ... Hopefully, I can get to Chicago and make a difference."
Besides the addition of Latos, the Reds return starting pitchers Johnny Cueto, Mike Leake, Homer Bailey and Bronson Arroyo. Aroldis Chapman, a left-handed reliever in his first two seasons, is also a possible starter next season.
In another move, Cincinnati claimed reliever Josh Judy off waivers from Cleveland. The 25-year-old right-hander pitched in 12 games over four stints with the Indians last season, with no record and a 7.70 ERA. He was 6-2 with a 3.12 ERA and 23 saves at Triple-A Columbus.
Epstein said the Cubs could still use some more starting pitchers in their farm system and at the major league level. He also said they're weighing ace Matt Garza's trade value versus locking him into a long-term deal. The right-hander was tendered a contract last week and is eligible for arbitration.
"It's hard to find top-of-the-rotation-type guys, so if you have them and there's a way to keep them around, I think that's always compelling for the club," Epstein said. "Now, that said, we're in a mode where we have to listen on everybody. If there's a way to improve the long-term outlook for this club in a significant manner, then we just can't look past opportunities like that. We're not in a situation where we have to do anything with Garza, but generally, we're in the business right now of taking our short-term assets and turning them into long-term assets."

Burnaby has been ranked the 26th most dangerous city in Canada, according to national crime rankings compiled by Maclean's magazine.
The magazine used Statistics Canada crime data for police service serving cities with Canada's 100 largest populations. The data comprised 2010 rates per 100,000 residents for six crimes?homicide, sexual assault, aggravated assault, vehicle theft, robbery and? breaking and entering.
While Burnaby's population of 230,009 was the 22nd largest, it came in at No. 26 in the most dangerous rankings. Its crime rate was 20.7 per cent higher than the national average, according to StatsCan's Crime Severity Index (CSI), which ranked Burnaby at 26th worst for violent crime and 24th worst for non-violent crime.
Of note is the fact Burnaby's crime numbers have seen a significant improvement over the years, with its CSI crime scores falling by 31.5 per cent since 2005 and 40.4 per cent since 2000.
Prince George was ranked No. 1 most dangerous, followed by Victoria and Saskatoon, Sask. Lower Mainland cities ranked ahead of Burnaby were Surrey (10th), New Westminster (15th), Vancouver (18th), Langley Township (20th) and Maple Ridge (24th).
Burnaby RCMP Chief Supt. Dave Critchley said the crime rates have been dropping and cautioned that percentages can be somewhat misleading when small numbers of actual crimes are involved.
Burnaby has seen success with its crime reduction program, which targets prolific offenders. But it is also dealing with new crimes, such as the recent spike in people being robbed of their smartphones, devices which didn't exist 10 years ago, Critchley said.
As for why Burnaby's crime rate is about 20 per cent higher than the national average (a drop from 39 per cent higher in 2009), he said there are no straightforward explanations.
"Generally, the western provinces have had higher crime rates than the eastern provinces in past decades," he said by email.
Critchley said factors contributing to higher crimes in the West include inner-city, high-crime neighbourhoods, transient populations of young males, addiction issues, gang culture and a thriving drug trade.
In Eastern Canada, factors contributing to lower crime rates, he said, include lower reporting rates ("for example, Ontario has the lowest reporting rate, with only 30% of all victimization incidents getting reported to police"), narrower income gaps and an older, more law-abiding population.
